Old Spice

Dear Mom: It’s time to go through your spice cupboard and get rid of a few things.

It’s safe to say that this jar of curry powder is almost as old as I am. The cilantro is pretty ancient, too. You have plenty of newer, fresher spices. Why are you hanging on to these old jars? Is it for their nostalgic value? Comic effect?

I feel fairly confident that this food coloring was purchased the last time we dyed Easter eggs together. I’m thinking 1984.

The good news is that you have a garden full of fresh herbs (I did not inherit your green thumb) and some beautiful tomatoes, too. It’s a real pleasure to step outside and snip off some fresh parsley or basil. I’m hoping your neighbor drops off some more cucumbers before I leave next week, and I can’t wait to eat some good Ohio corn.

It’s nice to come home and cook for you, Mom.

Love,

Barbra

The shot of the food coloring took me right back my mom’s poorly regulated cupboard. I did nearly criminal things with green and red dyes.

Does food coloring go bad? I suppose so. I actually went through the spice cupboard this past winter – the curry must have been hiding.
I’m happy to have you here cooking for me!
    Love,
    Mom

In 1996 after my mother remarried she sent out to me on a moving truck much of the furniture and kitchen items she had from her first marriage. Along with the kitchen items was a box of spices, many were years and years old but the most notable was a jar of oregano dated 1965, the year she got married!

  • Oregano herb can really spice up every food that you can cook, i love to add it on our foods ,“
